Project Details

Situated between the ocean and the foothills in the Wellington district of Eastbourne, RK Residence by Seear-Budd Ross is an apt response to its surroundings. Designed for a young family, the home effortlessly incorporates public and private spaces in an overall design that creates a sense of informality and ease.

Project Type: Beach House

Location: Wellington, New Zealand

Architect: Seear-Budd Ross

Photographer: Sam Hartnett

The architects from the local firm Seear-Budd Ross used muted, pale materials that echo the texture and tone of the nearby beach. For example, the weathered timber cladding was selected to resemble silvery-grey driftwood. At the same time, the roof's shape quotes the local architectural vernacular of traditional hip-and-gable construction but elongates it to create a more low-slung, relaxed profile that unifies the exterior and neatly encompasses both the dwelling and its garage.

The kitchen features a full suite of Fisher & Paykel appliances. The integrated fridge-freezer blends into the white cabinetry, while a recessed niche faces the monolithic island, both lined with the same grey limestone. Its natural variegation appears softly cloud-like, subtly referencing the moody beach landscape. The rangehood and minimalist black cooktop were installed flush with these surfaces. Below, a sleek Minimal Style black oven recedes from view, contributing to the kitchen's overall visually quiet efficiency
