The brief was for a flexible second home that could be both intimate and spacious, catering to its owners alone, or a larger and independent party of guests. The architect conceived it as two related barn-like structures, defined by simple, gabled rooflines, with a portcullis entrance on the streetside building that generates a sense of privacy and protection.
Project Type: Residential New Build
Location: Arrowtown, New Zealand
Architect: Patterson Associates Architects
Interior Design: Sonja Hawkins Design
Photographer: Sam Hartnett
The robust character of Millbrook's rural location served as Sonja's inspiration, guiding the material palette and prompting her to enhance its connection with the landscape. Timber-panelled walls in contemporary hues offer a stately yet refined note, while terracotta — “an ancient material that harks back to historic times” – brings warmth and tactility.
The main living area is anchored by a Poliform kitchen. Designed for entertaining, with multiple work zones and no overhead cabinetry, it is a highly functional space that feels airy and generous. A breakfast bar links the island and back benches, creating the perfect gravitational point for morning coffee. The hidden scullery is located behind a timber sliding door and easily accessible from the kitchen's primary work zone, ensuring the visible work areas stay clutter-free.
