Pohio Adams Architects remodel a traditional home in Sydney to create a beautiful dialogue between old and new.
Situated on the leafy streets of Centennial Park, Queens Park House was missing a fundamental connection to the outdoors. Responding to the client's brief, the architect opened the rear of the house with a series of French doors, introducing light and a much-needed connection to nature. Creating visual links to the outdoors through sight lines and materiality choices, Pohio Adams Architects achieved the client’s desired open living lifestyle

At the front of the house, two formal living rooms look out onto the park. Boasting coffered ceilings and traditional cornices, these elegant rooms were left intact as a nod to the original architecture. Upstairs, the private rooms have also been enhanced, from the main bedroom and luxurious proportioned ensuite bathroom to the bedrooms, bathroom, and children’s play space.
Black floors and simple oak joinery complemented with aged brass hardware provide continuity throughout the main living spaces, adding contemporary warmth and a robust character. An additional powder room and scullery-style laundry are also invisibly concealed within the joinery. Handmade Moroccan tilework in the kitchen creates a tactile backsplash area, around which a full suite of Fisher & Paykel products were installed, showcasing the brand’s aesthetic and functional versatility.
